Hi, its has been 3 years that my acer aspire idea 500 power supply broken (not working). since the replacement power supply is difficult to find in here (Malaysia), I have to modified the supply cable on the connector to match my aspire idea power supply (PS).
old bulky PS |

the original replacement is about £50 now at UK..While, here in my home country, no chance to find it. so, I have to find alternative way to make my idea 500 working.
one way was to use old power supply (twice the size of its original PS) and rearrange it cables to PS connector to suit the idea 500 supply. That was done (and working) 3 years ago.

Recently, I managed to get some courage to open my dusty aspire idea 500 original PS casing to find out the source of the problem.

In there, I found several bulking and leaking capacitor which could be the main supply problem.
with little bit of soldering skills, I replaced the capacitor (20 pence each = RM1 each)

after that, my aspire idea 500 PS are working again inside acer aspire idea 500. with a lot of saving from buying the new PS.
Chow.....
Thanks for the information. Then I will try to fix mine as well. Is it possible for you to provide a list of the replaced capacitors (the types)? Then I can order them in advance and replace them one by one.
ReplyDeleteHi Django, thanks for reading my little blog...about the capacitor, just order normal electrolytic capacitor..1000uF 16V 105degC temp. any brand would do. you will need about 8 pieces...please also check the fuse the go through life (brown cable)..it might blow as well. Hope this help
ReplyDeleteHi, may you tell me how much are electrical potentials for OT and PW_OK signals? My aspire 500 doesn't work and I measured a value of 0.15V for both previous signals. The other potentials are ok.
ReplyDeleteI modified the pinout of a standard PSU and the media center works fine, with 5V for OT and -12V for PW_OK. Anyway it looks like 0.15V is the right value for this custom PSU.
PS: I measured values without load.
Sorry, I mean -12V for OT and 5V for PW_OK.
ReplyDeleteHi, have you manage to sort it out? Sorry for late, its been a busy year for me since end of 2017.
