Hi, Peace upon you all.
This afternoon, my wife's food processor Kenwood km280 suddenly dead..she planned to prepare Dorayaki for us all, to eat in the evening.
Unfortunately, after pours mix all the ingredient into the bowl, switch On the main plug and adjust switch knob to no 1 speed, nothing happens. After many tried, after referring to the manual that comes with this food processor (KM280), she gives up and asks me to do something about it.
The first step to troubleshoot the problem is to check the power from the main plug and also the fuse. The outcomes are all well and working fine.
Second, check the internal connection and gearing, visually. the reason is to make sure no visible damage to the cable and gearing. This will require disassembly of the top cover. It can be done by removing six screws under.
after top cover is removed, internal circuits, motor, and gears (figure below) can be observed for any damage. Fortunately, there nothing obvious to the gearing and motor (refer to fig 2, fig 3 and fig 4)
There are three safety switches in this KM280. One is for latch switch (located on the left side of KM280) to lift Topside of KM280 up and down, to remove and install the bowl and beaters. This seems fine to me too. Checking using multimeter show continuity when it locks to the position.
The other two safety switches located near blender holder-high speed outlet (fig 4) and near the food processor holder-medium speed outlet (fig 2, middle left in the pic).
And both also looks fine, visually and testing with the multimeter (continuity test) showed the switch working as it should.
Considering that all possible culprits are tested fine. So, I power On the KM280 again with both top safety switch are pushed by hand...and the result is it working.
Attaching the medium speed outlet cover and high-speed outlet cover also make the KM280 works.
However, when I attached the blender to the high-speed outlet, and turn the knob on, this time KM280 is not working.
So, now I know where is the problem coming from. Looking at the bottom side of the blender..there is the white plastic stick that will push the safety switch when the blender is attached to the high-speed outlet. This white stick is linked all the way to the top of the blender and requires the cover to be attached properly
Turn out, my wife did not close the blender cover properly as in fig 6. Thus, causing the white stick to lift up slightly. This will result in an open circuit to the motor supply and KM280 will not able to operate. This also cost me half an hour to check the faults.
Therefore, it is best to check and verify all the possible fault before throwing it out or sending to the repairman which will cost you a lot of money. Luckily, in my case, there are no faulty to the KM280..its just been handled wrongly.

Thanks, i knew it probably was a safety switch somewhere and checking the damn lid for the 16th time i figured out it was placed wrong (on the orange juice squeezer), and tried it again so it worked! Shitty that you had to open the whole thing before you realized the same haha. Cheers!
ReplyDeletethanks..hahahah...you are so lucky..I am wasting my time troubleshoot the problem that doesnot exist..anyway,.. alot can be learnt from opening that top cover.:)..thanks for reading my blog anyway..cheers
DeleteHi any of use have problems with putting the lid back on the machine.
ReplyDeletei took it apart to check to see if the motor had burnt out.
tried putting it back together but will not go back into place for some reason any help would be appreciated thanks.
did you manage to put top cover back.. I think it is because of some parts are not properly sit in its place..try to have carefull look into it..Cheers
ReplyDeleteMy mixer stopped working after using the blender and is still not working after looking at the insides last night.
Deleteonly used the machine 6 times at the most and only bought it 18 months ago you expect things to last longer than that especially when you pay over £150 for it.
i am sorry to hear that your mixer not working anymore. if yours still within warranty, you can try to repair it using warranty assuming that you still keep the receipt. but, if it not possible, try check the connection to the main..internal fuse?or cable?usually, its cannot easily broken without any reason.
DeleteMine bought for £99 from Sainsburry 4 years ago..and still working up till now. and yes,at that price, we would expect it to last longer..:)..anyway, wish you good luck. Cheers
Thats the problem i am having getting the top cover back on keep raking it off.
ReplyDeletebut when i look everything seems to be in place.
but seems to be at the front where i am having the problems.
try to check which part are blocking the cover..it might be the black rubber at the front near mixer rotor. any success? cheers
DeleteThanks for the photos, managed to open it upside down so a few piece went out of its place -this helped alot! But, I have the same problem with getting the lid back on. Been trying for too long now, and it's the side where the speed switch are that won't go fully down. I initially thought it was the wires to the switch box that wasn't places correctry, but after trying for so long to nudge them into place while lowering the lid -I am lost. I need help :p
ReplyDeleteYou need to pop the dial at the side off. Then the box with the PCB for the dial will come out of the lid. Position this in the main part of the mixer. Then put the lid back on. Then place the dial back on. Probably a bit late to help you but hopefully will help others.

Any tips on vest way of doing this? I guess it's the 3 prongs that need to be pushed in but they don't seem to want to go and I don't want to break them.

Hi Brian. I am having the same problem to put the lid back of my mixer KM280. Same issue described above on 11th January. Could you help me and say how to take the dial out? Do I need to push in the 3 prongs to release the dial? Thanks.
ReplyDeletehi chaps could someone help me I took my km280 to bits and now trying to put it back but have three wires with a board on the end and do not know where to fit it back to can any one help please.
ReplyDeleteIf it is a tiny one with a small black component then it goes under the rubber gasket where the beater plugs into the mixer. There is a small moulded recess for it. I think it is a sensor of some sort.
DeleteHad the same problem with having the lid on Again. Can’t find the moulded recess. Do you have a photo. Even a drawing will be a great help. Thanks
DeleteHave you manage to sort it out? it sit under the mixer motor.. you need to lift the motor body carefully and you will see white rubber gasket.

ReplyDeleteHi, wondering if you can help. My mixer stopped working, so changed fuse, it wasn't that. Read this (didn't read it fully!) undid the six screws and took the top off and then couldn't put it back on at the front. Asked my Dad to help and left him to it, he came round and turned the machine upside down and this white rubber circle thing has fallen out of somewhere and we have no idea where it fits back in. So now have a mixer that will work (it was one of the safety switches) but have no idea how to put it back together again as don't know where the white rubber bit fits. Please can you help?
ReplyDeletehi jess, please check this one out

Thanks Brian, I scoured your blog and found this post yesterday. It was really helpful. I managed to get it all back together and it is working which I'm so pleased about! Thanks 👍
DeleteAnyone experienced the problem where the machine works fine, But if you switch it off and try putting it on again wont come on, No attachment was removed or installed, Just OFF from rotatry switch and ON again. Any leads or fixes is much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteMy mixer switches off after a few seconds and the speeds are out of sequence. Anyone know what part I need to replace?
ReplyDeleteMy mother received this kitchen machine from a friend and was having trouble working the food processor as well, she video called me but unfortunately I couldn't work out the problem either. I googled the issue and managed to find this blog, and after seeing the fig 6 picture I could see that my mother didn't have the lid on properly either (since there was a plastic piece sticking out from the side), she fixed it on properly and it now works! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this blog otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue and my mother was getting incredibly irate lol :D Absolute legend! all the best

ReplyDeleteHello. I purchased a brand new kenwood prospero. The outlet cover for the chopper/juicer does not fit or close properly. It seems as though the white but is top high. Hence the machine will not start. If I hold the security lock with my finger or a knife the machine works. Please help me.
ReplyDeleteThanks, this really helped me!! I thought I had broken my new machine.
