Transmission is an important component in vehicle movement. Without the transmission, more unnecessary stress will be imposed on the vehicle engine.
Why Need Transmission (Gearing) System
This was because more torque is required when the vehicle at standstill, thus require high torque gearing. While, during vehicle movement, less torque is needed, thus less torque require,
On the other hand, during high-speed movement, the higher gear ratio is needed (less rpm to the engine) to reduce stress to the engine. While, at a lower speed, low gear ratio (high rpm engine) to cater to high torque requirement.
How Often Need to Service?
In the case of my Mercedes W203 C180K, it got 5-speed auto transmission with a 722.6 series transmission system. Mercedes auto transmission requires a 40000 km service interval of changing gearbox oil and filter.
Total auto transmission oil capacity in W203 C180K is 8 liter with a service interval of 80000 km. However, during auto oil replacement, only 4 liters can be extracted from the transmission system. Thus, a half duration oil change is required which is 40000 km service work.
Tools:
1) Spanner
2) Jack
3) screwdriver
4) Jack stand
5) Oil pan
6) Mercedes star socket nut
7) Rachet
8) playar
9) clean tissue towel
10) lighting to work under the car
11) etc
Parts:
1) 4 + 1 liter auto transmission oil (extra 1L for backup)
2) Mercedes Oil pan rubber gasket (part no: A1402710080 ) -RM40+
3) Mercedes Auto transmission oil filter (part no: A1402770095) - RM40+
4) Transmission lock clip (Part no: A1409910055) - RM8
5) Mercedes AT Plug adapter for 722.6 (Part no: A2035400253) RM40+
Procedure:
1) Park the car on a secure and level location. Secure the rear wheel
2) Remove engine cover under the car by removing 6 screws under and also cover the transmission case.
3) Jack the car, put the jack stand for safety.
4) Drain the transmission fluid by loosening the drain bolt and make sure your drain pan is big enough for 4-liter fluid.
4) Once fluid completely drained, remove the transmission cover and take some time to clean it.
5) Clean transmission and replace the socket adapter (shown in arrow) with a new adapter.
6) Shown socket adapter
7) Installation is in reverse order. make sure, bolt for transmission cover is properly torque to prevent thread damage. follow the procedure very carefully.
8) Fill in auto transmission fluid from the engine bay transmission slot.
An important consideration during service work:
1) the most important work was during the re-installation of the oil pan to the transmission. improper use of torque might damage your transmission nut thread. Use proper torque when tightening the nut for bottom transmission cover.
2) oil capacity should be confirmed properly. It should be around 4+ liter (check with measuring stick)
