Its been several years now I am driving my Mercedes w203 with cranking difficulty in the engine.
Sometimes it starts at first try..sometimes, it took longer to start the engine. Still, it will crank at the end.

This symptom causing me a lot of hassle, and stress... It took me many years to finally manage to really find the root cause of the problem. At one point, I just get used to the problem and live with it.
Troubleshoot the Problem:
Battery and spark plug has been changed a year ago...I also think fuel filter also is still good because it's just been replaced several years ago...
I suspect it must be a fuel pump or something related to the fuel system. Therefore, decided to purchase a fuel pump and carried out fuel pump replacement work as on this link.
However, after the fuel filter has been changed, the car still showing the problem although the new pump has been installed.
So, googling around found one or two people suggesting fuel filter change. At first, I am a bit hesitant because of the feeling that the fuel filter still remained ok due to 3-4 years of usage with 30k+ mileage.

In the end, it is a cheaper option to give it a try thank sending the car to repair shop.
*All tools must be ready before repair work is done. Obviously, if hardware shop just around the corner and easily accessible like mine, then can proceed with the repair and purchase any tools whenever requires.
Procedure: Replacing Fuel Filter

5) jack the car. please do it cautiously for the sake of safety.
7) install the clip to the pipe from the tank to filter(pic).
can use this kind of clip to block the petrol from coming out of the fuel tube before removing the tube connection from the fuel filter |
8) remove the screw that holds the fuel filter. it might be a bit tight
9) remove/cut all the clamps and remove the pipe to/from the filter. please take note of which goes where to prevent mistakes when installing the new filter.
10) Install new filter and clamp it,
11) put the key and turn the key to position 2. please let 15-30 seconds for the fuel pump to pump enough petrol to the engine. then you can start the engine. Please note that It will take several tries before the engine operates normally again.
Sometimes, you will find it difficult to start your engine. Your engine light might also turn on due to not enough petrol pressure that goes to the engine. Try to drive around for a while to give proper fuel pressure to the engine. The engine light will go of itself when you turn off your engine and turn it on again, if, fuel pressure already normal.
Thank you
